Seniors Stay Active with Chiropractic Care

The National Institute on Aging has labeled lack of physical activity public enemy number one!

Here are the facts:

  • Lack of physical activity and poor diet, taken together, are the second largest underlying cause of death in the United States. (Smoking is the #1 cause.)
  • Exercise can help older people feel better and enjoy life more, even those who think they're too old or too out of shape.
  • Regular exercise can improve some diseases and disabilities in older people who already have them. It can improve mood and relieve depression, too.

"It is important to let people know that any type of moderate physical activity-from stretching exercises to brisk walking-will help improve their lifestyles," said Dr. Nicholas A. DiNubile M.D, clinical assistant professor, department of orthopedic surgery, Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

"Most individuals are aware of the cardiovascular benefits of exercise, but we are just beginning to appreciate the importance of exercise for the musculoskeletal system."
But many seniors find that as they grow older pain prevents them from moving around as much as they used to. Seniors spend billions of dollars on prescription drugs to handle pain and still find they can’t exercise.

Is there an alternative solution for seniors? A recent study showed that seniors under chiropractic care exercise more regularly, are more likely to be in better general health experience less pain, less arthritis, less depression and less chronic conditions.

"Chiropractic is more than just the bone clicking most people think of,” explains Dr. Mark Heintzkill, a chiropractor in Pasadena who has had exceptional success with active seniors. “Chiropractors have a range of treatments that encourage the joints to move again – which reduces the inflammation and pain.”

“Once the pain goes and the movement is normalized, you can get back to those activities you used to do - tennis, lifting the grandkids, playing ball,” said Dr Heintzkill. “And the more active you are, the healthier you will be. And the healthier you are the more you are able to enjoy your senior years.”

Over 70 percent of seniors report joint pain and Dr Heintzkill has found that low back pain is one the commonest causes of restricted activity. Taking pain medication on a regular basis builds up toxicity in the body and that creates another string of problems

“Low back pain had severely limited my activity,” said Bridgit Tolhein. “I had been to many doctors and I had to take medication for the pain daily. I really missed being able to go for my walks.”

After a course of chiropractic treatment that included cranial adjustment, gentle manipulation of the spine to encourage correct movement and nutritional support, Bridget is out walking 30 minutes every day again. “What a pleasure to be walking again – and not to be dependent on pain medication,” said Bridget. “It gave me back my life.”

If staying healthy depends on an active lifestyle, it seems chiropractic care is high on the list of solutions for seniors.
